Bronze bushings need to be roached to fit the pins. If the bushings aren't the problem, you can try new drawkeys, but it's only a short term fix and it dodges the real problem: the axle eye is streched out. Those 7500 lb IH axles are notorious for chewing up drawkeys. Some states permit boring and sleeving axle beams. If the kingpins are loose due to a chewed up drawkey, the axle bore may be egged out. Don't peen them! They will be stuck even tighter. If the drawkeys don't come loose with a few raps, use a drill centering guide and drill them out as large as practicle. I have seen a 50 ton press struggle with a pin in a 12K axle even after the keys were drilled out, just because of corrosion. Kingpins can be a bit different up here in the rustbelt.ĭepending on the age of the vehicle and the size of the axle, getting the drawkeys out can be a major headache, not to mention the pin itself. $225? Wow, did they do an front end alignment also? Will do, but one thing is there isn't a lot here in Vermont so not a lot of choices. You dont want to get something half way apart, then realize you have made a huge mistake and have to have it towed to get repaired.ġ Timothy 1:15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am chief. If I were you, I'd shop around for a better price, and make sure that you dont get an idiot that's gonna use a torch to heat them up to remove them, it ruins the temper of the axle. I alwasy used a bottle jack with a socket on top of it between the bottom of the pin and the top of the jack, you have to knock out the bushings, then beat the tar out of knuckle. If you do it youself, expect to do a lot of big time hammering. Shop around, you'll find a much better price. A garage here in town by me did them both for $225. It is possible, but 7 hours is wayyyyyy too much. I'm leaning towards letting someone else do the job which isn't something I do to often. I'm pretty good with mechanical stuff but I've never done Kingpins. Estimate is 7 hours labor so they are saying $715 for the job. My 1989 Bluebird Internation needs both Kingpins replaced to pass inspection. Can Kingpins be replaced in my driveway by me?
